Hooked on Crocheting

I've come to realize hobbies are super important. It's funny how many people don't seem to have any worthwhile pastimes other than playing video games or sleeping. I love using my spare time to work on projects that have meaning to me.

I'm not saying video games are wrong by any means, but I know way too many people who are sucked into these imaginary worlds with nothing to show for all the time they've put into them. I bought Skyrim before I left home and could easily spend hours in front of the TV. It was kind of scary in a way. I tend to obsess over such things and have found it's better if I just avoid them altogether. Plus, I'm not very good at them. Mario is more my style ;p.

My Mom taught me how to crochet when I was eleven years old. We had gotten snowed in and she was working on a blanket. My younger brother and I sat on the floor watching her crochet hook fly across the yarn. It was fascinating to see a warm, snuggly blanket emerge from a single strand of yarn. I was hooked from that moment on.

I've always personally viewed my crochet projects as mediocre since they never seem to come out right. The edges would be crooked or I somehow ended up skipping a stitch. It was quite vexing and I actually stopped for a while.

Shortly after setting our wedding date, I decided I wanted to make Dustin something special. There's nothing full of more meaning than a blanket crafted especially for you, so that's what I did. It took me quite a while and though my goal was to finish his blanket before we got married, I actually ended up finishing it in July 2011. He loves it and sleeps with it every night. He admitted it makes him feel as though he's wrapped up in my arms.

It's interesting because I also have memories connected with his blanket. I remember taking it with me to my college classes and discreetly working on it during boring lectures. When it got too big to lug around with me I would take time every evening to knock out a few stitches. I think the reason it took me so long to complete was because I chose to use a single double crochet stitch throughout. Silly girl.

I never thought of this before, but I crocheted my husband's beloved blanket without using a pattern. Here I was thinking I wasn't any good at crocheting ;p. Sometimes I don't have much faith in my abilities, which is silly. I've learned I can do most anything if I want to badly enough :).

What are some challenging projects you've tackled lately?
