Earlier this year I made it a goal to read all of the Newbery Award winners. I'm a big fan of children's literature and young adult novels. There’s something timeless about well-written books from these genres.
I think part of the reason my husband and I are so perfect for each other is because we share so many things in common. Our reading tastes are different of course, but I'm glad we can recommend books we've enjoyed to each other.
I tend to read much faster than him, but am a literal slow poke if I'm not enjoying my book of choice. I think I'm currently reading three different books. I finished The Hobbit and absolutely loved it. Alas, the same cannot be said for The Lord of the Rings trilogy. I’m nearly two hundred pages into the first book and I’m having a hard time understanding why it’s such a beloved fantasy classic.
My husband recently sent me The Tale of Desperaux and raved about how much he enjoyed it. Unfortunately, I think watching the movie first put me at a serious disadvantage. My response to the book was somewhat tainted because I already had the imagery of the movie imprinted on my mind. It’s a shame because the movie just doesn’t do this lovely tale justice.
It was an easy read and the overall theme of perseverance, true love and bravery was quite touching. If you're looking for a something entertaining to read, I highly recommend this charming 2004 Newbery Award winner!
