When I left for Afghanistan I made sure to bring along a couple skeins of yarn with me. I knew I wouldn't be able to acquire any while over there and wanted something fulfilling to occupy what little spare time I had to myself. I brought a jumbo size skein of red yarn to make granny squares, as well as a few skeins of green, yellow and white. I later asked my husband to send me some turquoise yarn.
I've discovered it's amazing how creative you can be despite a lack of resources.
My step-sister is pregnant with her first baby - a sweet little girl. I love making gifts for others and although I didn't really know what I planned on doing when I started out, I think this blanket and headband turned out perfect!
I found the idea for the corkscrew headband over at Maybe Matilda. It's super easy to whip up and I love how the yarn curls in on itself to make a cute spiral.
I've seen doily blankets and rugs scattered across the Internet and couldn't help falling in love. I never imagined I'd ever try such a thing, but I did. I bought the pattern here.
I love its intricacy. I made a few mistakes of course, but nothing too glaring. It's homemade and full of memories.
After spending a few weeks working on my doily blanket, I decided I needed a break from working on the longer, more time consuming projects. I've seen various patterns for washcloths, but since I tend to use sponges I originally thought it would be pointless to make one.
My husband was brought up using washcloths though, so at least he'll get some use out of it (whenever he washes dishes that is ;p). Plus, it was a good way for me to learn a new stitch. I love how the puff stitches look like little flowers. I also imagine they'll help scrub away grime :).
I couldn't resist starting another doily. I'm super excited to see how this one turns out and am obsessed with getting it perfect. I've already had to undo a few rows, but I'm pretty sure I've gotten all the kinks worked out.
Turquose and red - everyone told me it would be a terrible color combination. Luckily, I went with my gut and absolutely love this cheery work in progress. I can't help but be happy when I look at it. It's a bit hard to work on it here since I don't have much space, but I'll occasionally add a few more squares whenever the desire hits.
I had no idea I would get such varied uses out of those skeins of yarn I packed away before leaving home. It's amazing to look back at all I've made these past few months.
